SEPTEMER 21 (PAULIE)

Paulie is gone, Paulie done died
Paulie passed away some time during the night
sometime between midnight and first morning light
Paulie crossed over and got up and died

I howled at the moon and its ugly white light   
I screamed at the stars till I broke down and cried
then I got up and cursed every damn' thing in sight
still Paulie done died some time during the night

Paulie done died somewhere during the night
it ain't fair, it ain't just and it ain't goddamn' right
Paulie was pretty and clear-eyed and bright
and she never saw the coming of rhe first autumn light

Summer died quickly and sudden and fast
ain't nothing will keep end ain't nothing will last
hold on all you can and hold on all you might
Paulie done died some time during the night

Let me tell you Paulie...

First day of autumn broke ever so bright
I watched the stars fade in the last summer's nght
I stared at the skies in a cold morning light
and morning broke hard while you'd gone and done died

Paulie is gone, Paulie done died
can't bring her back, god knows I have tried
Paulie cone died in the stll of the night
ain't nothing in this world that can ever make this right
